What's it like for you to be an American?

The Photography of Robert Kalman

On view March 27 - May 25, 2026
concurrently with Likeness & Legacy
Bendel Mansion Arcade Gallery

In this intimate exhibition, acclaimed portrait photographer Robert Kalman invites viewers to look closely into the faces, stories, and personal truths of individuals from across the United States. Through his signature style of honest, beautifully composed portraiture, Kalman captures how people see themselves within the ever-evolving American experience.

Each portrait is paired with a handwritten reflection, offering an unfiltered glimpse into the hopes, struggles, and perspectives that shape life in this country today. Together, these voices and images form a powerful mosaic that defines the American identity in this milestone year celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
