Planetarium & Astronomy Center
A New Window Into the Universe
Opened in November 2025, our new Astronomy Center is a state-of-the-art facility that brings together our Planetarium and Observatory programs under one roof for the first time in our nearly 90-year history. Designed as a dynamic hub for exploration, discovery and education, it represents a major step forward in how we connect our community to the night sky.
This center is more than a building. It is a transformative resource for science learning, STEAM education and public engagement, offering immersive experiences that inspire curiosity across all ages.
A Milestone in Our History
The Planetarium & Astronomy Center is Phase II of our Generations Campaign, building on the success of the Knobloch Family Farmhouse (Phase I, opened November 2018).

The Planetarium
Immersive. Interactive. Inspiring.
At the heart of the Astronomy Center is our next-generation planetarium, designed to transport visitors beyond Earth and into the cosmos. Guests can take an immersive journey through the cosmos at any of our regularly scheduled Planetarium Shows, including our signature "Stamford Skies" astronomer-led live program, 360° full-dome cinematic experiences, and immersive audio-visual/laser light concerts.

- Cutting-edge Digistar 2025 planetarium software, offering dynamic, real-time content and internet integration for up-to-date astronomical data
Programming
Our planetarium offers a wide range of experiences, including:
- Live, astronomer-led presentations with interactive audience engagement
- Pre-recorded fulldome cinematic films exploring space, science and the universe
- Immersive audio-visual laser light & concert experiences
- Every show begins with a live introduction to the night sky, connecting audiences to what they can see above them in real time
The Observatory
See the Sky in Real Time
Located on the top floor beneath a retractable roll-back roof, our observatory offers direct access to the night sky through powerful optical instruments guided by expert astronomers.
Primary Telescope
- 14-inch Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain reflecting telescope
- Equatorial mount for precise tracking of celestial objects
- Enables direct viewing and astrophotography
- Observe the Moon, planets, star clusters, nebulae and more
Solar Telescope
- 152 mm Lunt H-alpha solar telescope
- Filters out over 99% of the Sun’s light for safe viewing
- Reveals solar features such as sunspots, prominences and dynamic solar activity

The Astronomy Center is designed to expand access to STEAM learning and inspire lifelong curiosity about the universe. Whether exploring distant galaxies in the planetarium or observing the Sun and planets in real time, visitors are invited to experience science in a deeply engaging and unforgettable way.
